Back in 1998 IT certification organizations began a trend that changed the direction for employers, employees and training institutions. Employers started requesting these certs, employees began the almost chaotic chase of a myriad of acronyms and training institutions started the pocket lining process of selling, influencing and in some instances misleading potential students. We have witnessed the rise and demise of online training offering MCSE in 5days, CISSP in 2 days, and, in one instance, promising certifications without doing an exam. Those were the days. Today we are a long way from 1998. Information Technology has morphed and morphed again. It appears that the old never left. Concerns of the past are the concerns of today. I have opined on the need for the development of curriculum that stresses Networking Technology. In my opinion, one of the best courses that was ever offered in the field of IT was the Novell networking essentials. My students were always advised as to the importance of understanding the good old OSI model. The plethora of certifications available leaves the beginner or career changer bewildered. I can recall the occasions where I was approached with the question “what is the best cert to have?”.
